I wasn't sure how I would fare reading this when my reading slump hasn't really allowed me to get much reading done. But I found this story to be very easy on the eyes. I was swept away instantly especially in the beginning when I usually always struggle to get past the beginning of any novel and that wasn't the case with this one. There was just something so eerie and mystifying.
We follow the main character, Bridey, who is sixteen years old and afraid of the ocean. She was six when she witnessed her grandfather die when he was mysteriously lured into the sea. Nobody ever believed her word and people thought she was crazy. When a girl turns up dead by the shore, and more occurrences of girls starting to disappear, she knows the incidents have to be related to whatever killed her grandfather.
An island. People disappearing. A mysterious and eerie sea. This seriously reminded me of Charmed because of how the mother of the protagonists was drowned by a sea monster and Supernatural because in one episode when the protagonists found themselves in a town where people started disappearing all of a sudden and it was so creepy. I just thoroughly enjoyed the vibe I got from Sarah's writing.
What I loved about Bridey is that she still cared about the people in her town, everyone in the island, even though she wasn't treated fairly and not believed. I could easily get behind her story and found her to be an interesting character.
Overall, I thought Fear The Drowning Deep was definitely just the book I needed at the time to get me into reading. After I finished, I scavenged Goodreads to find a similar books even though I knew books are never one and the same. And books that have unique premises can never be toped by other novels! I ended up loving the uniqueness that this was.
I seriously can't wait for Sarah's next novel called Reign of The Fallen!!
