After cheating death, Veronica Welling is determined to savor every moment in her idyllic kingdom with both her true love and best friend by her side at last. At the same time, Mackenna Reid is enthusiastically building her new life and a theater with her prince. But just as their dreams of happiness are within reach, the world Vee and Kenna have chosen is ripped away, leaving them to face their most horrific challenge yet—their old lives.
Thrust out of Doon, the best friends are confronted with tormentors from their past and no way to return to their adopted land. When the MacCrae brothers rush to their rescue,
the girls' situation turns from nightmare to modern-day fairy tale. But their happiness could be short lived: unbeknownst to them, someone in their closest circle is aiding the witch of Doon in her bid to destroy the kingdom once and for all.

Loving the first book but mildly okay with the second book, I was worried about Shades Of Doon. Early readers have said that this one was the best so far in the series. I had high hopes that the pacing would pick up but it ended up being a let down.

I had so many problems with the story. The second book was disappointing but this one was worse. I felt like the whole series has been getting dragged on when I think it could have ended with the first book. That cliffhanger wasn't too shocking and it failed to make me curious for the second book either way.

I absolutely loved the first book. The interactions between Veronica and Jaime were really engaging. And the vast world of Doon was very mysterious and interesting to see unfold. But now the plot with the same old witch is dull. It wasn't exactly epic in the first book to begin with.

My only favorite parts were seeing Jaime and Veronica together. But I do think their romance lacked it's luster that it had in the first book.

I wanted to skip over Mackena's point of view because as I've said before, I think it's a bit pointless. It's not as interesting as Veronica's and the story could have been stronger without her narration.

The cover for Shades of Doon is really beautiful and pleasing to the eye. It's my favorite of the series so far which is one reason I'm sad that I didn't love this book.

Once upon a time, I would have recommended the first book in the series because I think it's a really strong start to the series. But the second and third book just don't compare.

Overall, Shades Of Doon failed to gain my love and I don't think I'll continue with the series. I think it's pretty cheesy and very predictable.

  2. I was kind of curious about this series and now after reading your review, I probably won't bother picking it up. I'm sorry to hear that it didn't live up to your expectations though! Gotta hate when that happens while reading! :/ Great review, Karina!
