The Interview

Thanks so much for having me here! I’m tickled to be featured on WatchaReading Blog.

• Are there any authors that you look up to or inspire you?

I look up to too many authors to include. 

In regards to Rom-Com novelists I respect Elle Casey, Lisa Lutz, Stephanie Bond, Janet Evanovich and Shelly Fredman to name a few. I admire Ann Brashares for all of her books in multiple genres. She amazes me.

• Did you know that you always wanted to be a writer?

Not really. As a kid I stuttered, was incredibly geeky, and was picked on. My folks took my to the local library almost every week where I usually checked out eight books, returned them the following week, and checked out eight more. I was an avid reader, always wrote, but didn’t realize that writing could become a profession.

• What made you want to write Part-Time Princess?

I had just finished writing my first NA book called The Story of You and Me, which is sweet, romantic, funny and incredibly emotional.

I realized I needed to write something that was primarily romantic and funny. Something that would make me and my readers flat out laugh—a lot. I came up with the idea for a princess-impersonator during a yoga class and I just ran with it.

I started writing this book before we realized we had to move my mama to Assisted Living. And I finished it after she died unexpectedly on 2/16/14. Writing a rom-com book during a dark time was a strange journey for me. And maybe a gift from heaven. Laugh while you cry.

• Is there a specific place you go to where you feel inspired?

If I need inspiration I exercise. That always does it for me. The gym. Yoga. A really tough work-out class. A fast beach-walk. Cleaning my house.

I live in California but I frequently draw on my Midwestern roots when I write. I feel my Midwestern upbringing gives my heroines a little practicality, humor, down-to-earth attitude, and a little kick-ass attitude to boot. 

• Describe Part-Time Princess in less than 5 words.

Romance. Friendship. Surprises. Laughter.  

• Do you make your books out of real-life experiences or is it all your imagination?

Totally combo on this one. Some stories are loosely based on things that happen in my life. The vast majority is imagined.

• If you had the chance to collaborate with any author, who would it be and why?

This is a hard one. I have so many author ‘crushes’. I love Ann Brashares, especially for her book, My Name is Memory. I love Shelly Fredman for her very funny and clever Brandy Alexander books. I’d love to do a combo book with her someday. Elle Casey is rocking rom-com. I’d love to do something with her. I recently stumbled upon author Mimi Strong with her Peaches books. She’s hilarious as is Victoria Wessex.

• Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

This is the Golden Age for writers. Do not allow anyone to tell you “No.” DO allow a lot of folks to edit your ms. I’ve learned the hard way that one or two, or three editors still don’t find and correct all your goofs and typos. Having goofs and typos does not make you a ‘less-than-writer’. It simply makes you a storyteller who needs several great editors.

Pamela DuMond is the author who discovered Erin Brockovich’s life story, thought it would make a great movie and pitched it to ‘Hollywood’.

She writes romantic comedic mysteries, romantic YA time travel and New Adult romance.

Her book The Story of You and Me was a Quarterfinalist in the Amazon Breakout Novel Award (ABNA) 2014 in Romance.

Cupcakes, Pies, and Hot Guys was a Quarterfinalist in ABNA 2013 in Mystery .

She’s addicted to TV shows — The Voice and Reign. The movies Love Actually and The Bourne trilogy (with Matt Damon — not that other actor guy,) make her cry ever time she watches them. (Like — a thousand.)

When she’s not writing Pamela’s also a chiropractor and cat wrangler. She loves reading, the beach, working out, movies, TV, animals, her family and friends. She lives in Venice, California with her fur-babies.

She likes her coffee strong, her cabernet hearty, her chocolate dark, her foods non-GMO and she lives for a good giggle.
