Interview with Jennifer M. Eaton
1. There's not a lot of alien novels out there so what
made you write about one?
Well, that’s an
easy question to answer. I wrote
FIRE IN THE WOODS because there were not
a lot of alien stories out there—At least not ones I was interested in. Most of
what I could find was strict science-fiction with galactic wars, space ships
and other planets. I wanted something a little more down to Earth. I wrote the
book that I wanted to read, since I could not find it on the bookshelves.
2. Have you read The Lux Series by Jennifer L.
Armentrout and Alienated by Melissa Landers? Or any other
alien books out there? (Also alien books)
Funny,
the Lux Series came out when I was nearing the end of the first draft of FIRE
IN THE WOODS. I did finally pick up the first book a few months ago, and I have
to admit that I loved it. I was a little heartbroken at first, because it was a
teen-alien romance like my story, but I relaxed when I realized that our aliens
are polar-opposites, and the plotlines are nothing alike.
Alienated is on my “To Read” list, but I am going to hold
off on picking this up until I am done writing my series, because I don’t want
to be influenced by reading something that might have a similar premise.
3. What can we expect from Fire in the Woods?
FIRE IN THE WOODS is a fast-paced,
high-action, chase romance story. I set out to write something fun to read. I
think everyone will have a good time losing themselves in this story… as long
as they are not the ones running from the US military. [Grins]
4. What genres do you like to read?
I like to read most types of speculative fiction, but High Fantasy
is my sweet spot. I love cuddling up with a good book about dragons.
5. How do you think you would react to finding an alien?
Would you be the same as Jess?
Hmm, great
question!
I’m not really sure. I’d probably wouldn’t have had the guts to keep helping him
when I knew something weird was going on. I like to play it on the safe side.
I’d rather write an exciting story than live one.
6. Will Fire in the Woods be a
standalone or can we expect a sequel?
FIRE IN THE WOODS was written as a
stand-alone, but my publisher loved it so much they contracted me for a series
of books. So, if you love FIRE IN THE WOODS, you will be able to pick up the
sequel, ASHES IN THE SKY in early 2015, and book three, tentatively titled
EMBERS IN THE SEA in late 2015.
7. How do you feel when a new book of yours is about to
be published?
Having a book come out rallies up a combination of
excitement and a little fear. On one side, I am thrilled that people will have
the opportunity to read, and hopefully love, my story as much as I do. On the
other hand, I always worry about what I might have missed that may come out in
the reviews. That’s why I try not to read the “text” of reviews unless someone
gives me the okay first.
8. What was the hardest part of writing Fire in
the Woods?
The hardest part of writing FIRE IN THE WOODS was actually
trimming it down. There was a whole lot of “wandering” in the early revisions,
but something happened in each “wandering session” that was important. Trimming the walking down to pick up
the pace, while not losing all the valuable information intrinsic to the story
was a challenge.
9. How do you develop your characters and keep track of
them?
In most cases, I just start with a description in my head
and let the character develop as I write. Jess is a photographer in FIRE IN THE
WOODS, but she didn’t have any interest in pictures in the first several
drafts. I decided she needed a hobby that would help get her into trouble, and
that hobby developed into an undying passion that left her at odds with her
father’s dreams for her future. It
was perfect, and I can no longer even think of Jess without a camera in her
hand.
FIRE IN THE WOODS has a relatively small cast, so I didn’t
have to do anything special to keep track of them, but I have used spreadsheets
in the past.
10. Do you have certain authors that you look up to?
I Really liked Robert Jordan’s early Wheel of Time books. His stories
really drew me in. I am also a big fan of Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonriders of
Pern. (Am I dating myself?) For newer authors, I am a big fan of Jocelyn Adams.
She is fearless in her use of voice, and I think it sets her apart.
11. What advice can you give to aspiring writers?
Number one, keep writing.
Number two, be honest with yourself and find out what the
weak point in your writing is, and find someone to help make you stronger.
Never stop working on making your writing better.
This or That Questions:
Paperback or E-book?
Both! But I do like the convenience of grabbing my E-reader and
having all my books in one hand.
Kindle or Nook?
I must
admit, I love my Kindle. It’s fun for word games, too.
Vampires or Werewolves?
Neither! Aliens, baby. Always aliens! But if I
had to choose, it would be werewolves. Vampires never interested me.
Night or Morning?
Definitely
night. Mornings were made to be slept through.
Winter or Summer?
Summer! I don’t like to be cold.
Gentlemen or Bad Boys?
Hmmm. I like to LOOK at a bad bod, but when it comes right down to
it, I prefer a gentleman. But why can’t a guy be both?
Paranormal or Contemporary?
Definitely paranormal. I do read a lot of contemporary to absorb
other writer’s styles and see what else “out there” is being published, but I’d
rather cuddle up with a bit of speculative fiction.
Young Adult or New Adult books?
There are not too many new adult books out there right now that
interest me. At the moment, publishers are forcing the genre to be
“contemporary” which I personally believe is wrong. So I would have to say
young adult is more my style. There is a lot more flexibility there and young
adult touches every genre.
