As a teen I was never as put-together as Harper, but like her, I was always deeply involved in one artistic project or another, sometimes to the point that I wanted my friends to leave me alone. And like her, I was (and still am) terribly socially awkward, though I mean well.
A friend of mine wrote a short story in which I started dating a boy I’d been friends with since kindergarten. SHE DID NOT CHANGE OUR NAMES and SHE READ IT OUT LOUD IN CLASS. And worse, she’d decided we belonged together because we were both such nerds. As I did not like the boy “that way” and did not see myself as a nerd, this was pretty mortifying. I drew on this experience when writing Harper’s reaction to some of the guys her classmates wanted to pair her with.
I was chosen Most Academic, which again I did not appreciate because I felt like people were calling me Most Nerdy, and Most Likely to Succeed, which I did not understand at all. I was valedictorian, editor of the newspaper, and drum major of the marching band, but I didn’t feel like a success. That experience was the germ of the idea for this series. The differences between the way I saw myself and the way other people saw me were really eye-opening.
I would be SO CURIOUS, but I probably wouldn’t ask the guy out because I would be so embarrassed. The great thing about writing novels is that instead of constructing what you would realistically do in a situation, you can craft the delicious thing you would never do and make it happen.
Right now there are three. Biggest Flirts (Superlatives #1) is in stores now, and Most Likely to Succeed (Superlatives #3) will be published on August 4. I have told my editor that I would love to write more, but that will happen only if readers love the first three and tell their friends about them! Sales need to be great in order for a series to continue.
